Title: The Complete Persepolis

Author: Marjane Satrapi

Rating: 5/5

Genre: Memoir

Format: Paperback/ Graphic Novel

Club: I read this for the Diverse Books Club

I’ve been meaning to read more books about Middle East history because my knowledge is severely lacking; Upstate New York schools don’t tend to teach much history beyond the United States and Western Europe. Well, this was a really interesting way to learn about a pretty complicated topic. I’m a huge fan of graphic novels and the illustrations really helped bring the story to life for me.

The author is a fantastic storyteller and I couldn’t stop reading; I absolutely flew through the pages! I still can’t stop thinking about it either.

I highly recommend this story to everyone. There are scenes of war, death, torture, sex, and drugs so maybe not for all ages, though I don’t really believe in censorship. Only privileged children get to be sheltered from war. Just saying.

Any books you would suggest to me about the Middle East?
