Title: Stella Díaz Has Something to Say

Author: Angela Dominguez

Rating: 4/5

Format: Hardcover

The author draws on her own experiences growing up in this “own voices” middle grade novel. Stella Díaz is Mexican American and has some speech difficulties that make her very shy. Her best friend is not in her class this year and she is struggling to make new friends. While already not fitting in, she also discovers that she is legally considered an “alien” and she must come to terms with what that means. Her love for beta fish and aquarium life in general help her through this and add some uniqueness to Stella’s personality.

I thought this book was really cute and it has some important messages. I would recommend it to my nieces and nephews. However, I’m not sure how much I will actually remember about this story a year from now. It’s pretty short and I read it really quick and moved on to a new novel.
